Eight members of the Ashville TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) OH #0853 attended the 2012 State of Ohio Recognition Day at the Hilton Akron/Fairlawn Hotel in Akron, Ohio, April 27-28.  Pat Bennett, Shadeville, Ellen Starkey, Circleville, Eleanore Chandler, Rose Jamison, Barbara Cummins, Marilyn Payne of Ashville and Jo Ann Echelbarger of South Bloomfield enjoyed the meeting. 

 

Eleanore Chandler was recognized for being a KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) for twelve years.

 

TOPS is a wonderful organization which promotes sensible eating habits and a healthy lifestyle.  Our club is very active and welcomes new members.  We meet on Wednesdays at 9 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Ashville Church of Christ in Christian Union, 420 Long Street, here in Ashville.

 

Happy Birthday to our friends who were born in May.  Walton Spangler, Roxie Barr, Ken Harness, Robert Stickel, Walter Koch, Jane Wilson, Pat Howell, Linda Mithoff, Pat Pontius, and Mona Lee Trego.

The Viking Festival was a good one, according to local residents who enjoyed a variety of Viking activities.  Although Saturday’s weather was not too good, Mother Nature cooperated on Sunday, allowing the many visitors to enjoy all the festivities.

Ashville Area Heritage Society President, Mike Kindt, announces the winners of the annual 4th of July tee-shirt contest by Teays Valley High School art students under the tutelage of Cheryl Cherry. Heather Simmons, won first place and received a $50.00 award; Runners Up, Hannah Wolaver and Kasi Welsh were awarded $25.00 each and Karina Overholt was named Artistic Merit winner. 

 

Wednesday, May 16, is going to be a big day for Ashvillians:  At 1 o’clock Charlie Morrison will be inducted into the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging Senior Hall of Fame at the Janis Center on the Ohio State Fairgrounds.  The event is free and open to the public.  All those able are invited to attend and support our Charlie.

 

In the evening, between 5 and 8 p.m., the Ashville Area Heritage Society/Small-Town Museum will team up with the S. Bloomfield Wendy’s for another of their famous Burger Bashes.  Fifteen percent of all food sales during this three-hour period will go to the Ashville Area Heritage Society/Small Town Museum.  There will be raffles and drawings.  Plan to attend and support your local AAHS and museum.

 

It seems the older we become, the faster the years go by.  Every time I receive my monthly Pickaway County Senior Center Newsletter, I am impressed by how quickly time seems to go by.   Here it is May, already.   I would like to point out some of the Center’s important highlights, as follows:

 

May 10 – Mother’s Day Luncheon; May 12, Tenderloin Sale, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.; May 15 – Health Fair – 9 to 11 a.m.; May 24 – Monthly Fellowship luncheon; May 31 – Over 80’s Luncheon.  To attend any of the luncheons, call 740-474-8831 by the day before.  Reservations are being accepted for Buckeye Treasures, a day trip to Mansfield, Ohio.  $88.00 per person.  Contact the center, 474-8831, if you are interested in going.

 

On Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Ashville Good Friends Good Thymes Herb Club will be sponsoring National Herb Day at Engel’s Landscaping Center, 158 Lockbourne Eastern Road.  There will be lots of herbalicious foods, free herbal literature, planted containers and a large hyperufa planted with a fairy garden for their raffle.  Raffle tickets can be purchased at Engel’s.  Join the Club in celebrating the Rose as the 2012 Herb of the Year.

 

Early Head Start has an infant/toddler classroom in Ashville serving children ages 0 to 3 years.  Interested parties should call Tammy Smith, Family Services Coordinator at 740-474-9544, extension 100.

 

Relay for Life will be held from noon, Saturday, June 2 until 6 a.m. Sunday, June 3 at the Teays Valley Stadium.  Visit www.ashvilleohio.gov and click on the Relay for Life logo, for detailed information.

 

Young people, if you are students and are interested in employment, apply for the 2012 Student Works Program at the Ashville Municipal Building, 200 East Station Street.

 

Council passed a Resolution providing a ceremonial name for Circleville Avenue.  This was a senior project and will take effect immediately.  Thanks to Ashville Post Master, Bill Simon, both names will be recognized by the U.S. Postal Service.
